Kwetu was born from the belief that luxury should be comfortable. Kwetu, meaning "our place" in Swahili, embodies our commitment to crafting environments that are as much yours as they are ours - a true home away from home. Evolving from a quaint colonial residence into a sophisticated boutique hotel, Kwetu seamlessly blends elegance with contemporary flair, infused with the essence of Kenya.
At Kwetu, our focus lies in sharing the stories of the individuals, communities, traditions, and landscapes that have shaped our identity. As we honour our vibrant history while pursuing a commitment to luxurious comfort, we consistently demonstrate that wellness & sustainability are central to the narratives we embrace. These are stories woven through our hotel, spanning from our historical roots to our towering trees, from our welcoming staff to our cherished guests, and from the ordinary homely comfort to the special touches of luxury.
Kwetu endeavours to foster a community spirit in everything we undertake, epitomised by the warmth and hospitality of our staff which mirrors the embracive nature of Kenyan culture. Community lies at the core of our mission; as we honour those who have been pivotal in shaping not only our hotel but also our nation, we actively give back to our local communities.
In our commitment to nurturing the next generation, Kwetu offers internship opportunities to students from nearby educational institutions. Our goal is to encourage them to nurture their own potential and discover their role in service to the collective community and the planet.
While embracing a global perspective, we remain deeply connected to local concerns and cultures. From construction through operation, Kwetu consistently prioritises working with local contractors, artisans, farmers, producers and suppliers. Our guests don't merely witness local culture; they fully immerse in it through the stories embedded within every minute detail, ultimately playing integral roles in our unfolding story.
At Kwetu, we are deeply committed to fostering local talent and craftsmanship as part of our social responsibility to uplift the community around us. By championing local artisans and artists, we not only enrich our hotel with their unique skills and attention to detail but also solidify Kwetu's reputation for bring elegant and contemporary, while exquisitely and uniquely Kenyan.
Kwetu is dedicated to embracing circularity as a cornerstone of our philosophy and sustainability strategy. Our pledge extends beyond mere environmental stewardship; it embodies a holistic approach to resource management that drives innovation, efficiency, and positive impact across all aspects of our operations.
Some examples of our commitment to circularity include our partnership with food waste experts at Taka Taka Solutions to implement the Sustainable Food and Beverage program. This initiative aims to reutilise our organic food waste with nearby farm suppliers, thereby growing the fruits and vegetables served at the hotel's restaurants.
We also repurpose coffee grounds from our coffee machines as body scrubs, which are offered to our guests for personal use!
Our approach to waste management ensures responsible practices throughout our operations. At Kwetu, we have taken significant steps to reduce our environmental impact by eliminating single-use plastics from the guest experience. Instead, we provide large-format bathroom amenities, replacing traditional small bottles of shower gel, shampoo, conditioner, and lotion with eco-friendly alternatives. Additionally, we promote recycling by using recyclable aluminum espresso pods, effectively cutting down on non-recyclable waste generated by the hotel. Waste separation is a fundamental practice at Kwetu, where bins are meticulously labeled and colour-coded at the source for different waste streams, facilitating efficient recycling and composting processes. Moreover, we prioritise the proper handling, storage, and disposal of used oil through licensed recyclers, ensuring this resource is managed sustainably. These initiatives underscore our commitment to sustainability, driving us towards a greener future while enhancing guest experiences.
Sustainability is deeply ingrained in Kwetu, evident in our rigorous energy conservation practices that enhance environmental health and operational efficiency. Our Guest Room Management System (GRMS) regulates heating and AC temperatures, while Passive Infrared Motion Sensors (PIS) automatically adjust LED lighting based on room occupancy and door activity, optimising energy use without compromising guest comfort. Our Building Management System (BMS) extends these efforts to oversee facility pumps, motors, and resource consumption, promoting sustainable practices throughout the hotel. We utilise Energy Star-rated HVAC systems and air purifiers to maximise energy efficiency and maintain indoor air quality, alongside optimised kitchen hoods to minimise kitchen emissions. To reduce greenhouse gas emissions, we employ solar panels and solar water heating to decrease reliance on conventional energy sources, supplemented by using LPG instead of traditional fuels in our boilers. Additionally, we support sustainability by providing electric vehicle charging stations onsite, further lowering our carbon footprint.
Our water conservation efforts are driven by innovative practices and technology integration. Metered water connections sourced from our own borehole water treatment plant are sub-metered across all main departments, monitored meticulously by our Smart Building Management System (BMS) as part of our Sustainability Program and in alignment with the Hilton LightStay Program. To further reduce water consumption, bathroom sinks are equipped with aerators and utilise low-flow or dual flush versions. In guest suites, low-flow shower faucets and a Passive Infrared Motion Sensor (PIS) system enhance water use efficiency. Our reuse-card system encourages guests to reuse towels, promoting additional water conservation. In our laundry operations, machines are operated at optimal loads, using excess steam from the boiler to function. Laundry is weighed before washing to maximise efficiency and conserve water and energy. Finally, we ensure 100% treatment of wastewater onsite, transforming it into recyclable water used to irrigate the Hotel's botanical gardens. Grey and black water is managed through grease traps and a biological wastewater treatment plant, ensuring that treated water is safely released or reused.
Sustainability at Kwetu extends to every aspect of our operations, including our approach to materials and resources. Our commitment is evident in the bathroom amenities, where containers made from Rice Husks hold biodegradable bathing soaps and shampoos, complemented by bamboo packaging for additional amenities. Even our Pens and Pencils are biodegradable and plantable, aligning with our goal of minimising environmental impact throughout their lifecycle. In each department, we encourage the reuse of paper through labeled boxes, supporting our Responsible Sourcing Policy which mandates the purchase of FSC- certified paper. These initiatives reflect our dedication to sustainable practices, ensuring that every choice we make contributes positively to our planet.
At Kwetu, we are deeply committed to environmental conservation, exemplified by our partnership with the nearby Karura Forest, Nairobi's largest urban gazetted forest. This collaboration not only aims to protect its existing forest cover but also focuses on regrowing and expanding these vital green spaces. Through immersive experiences and tree planting activities involving both our guests and staff, we strive to honour this legacy, fostering a sense of environmental stewardship and contributing to the long-term sustainability of this precious ecosystem,
Sustainability defines our identity and shapes how we engage with our guests, hosts, and surrounding community. We demonstrate our dedication to sustainable luxury through every aspect of our operations, guided by our comprehensive sustainability management framework and climate-conscious design choices.
